Hi All
I visited the US last October and one of the stops I made was to see a friend Ian Algie, now of Algie Composites, in Columbus OH. Ian and I worked together on this car for 3 years before it got to stage shown in the video which is a of a programme broadcast recently on V8 racing in New Zealand. The engine it started off with was a Formula 500/Formula A Chapparal 302 V8, but later we put in a Milodon block based V8, cast in Aluminium with goodies such as Cosworth pistons, Carillo rods, Ti valves, electronic injection from a Porsche and Bosch electronic ignition: the first setup had Lucas slide throttle injection and a Magneto, mamma mia! We did all-nighters trying to get it to run properly in that old configuration before junking it. As the video says, transmission was pure Alfetta out of a 2L GTV but the bell housing blew up so it was replaced with a GTV6 unit that handled the power no problems. There were some mods to it: pressure oiling of stress points via an internal pump driven off the shaft, oil heater, oil cooler etc. All engineering design and machining was done by Ian. In Columbus I checked out a twin-engine, full suspension kart he designed and built in carbon fibre, a veritable beast. He is quite simply one of the best race car mechanics I have come across and oh yes, an Alfa afficianado. In his workshop, apart from a WWII tank and various race machinery, there are things like an Alfetta 2L engine, hardly run. Call him if you want anything.
