Certainly sounds like something electric.

And if it's a Spider, and it's electric, the odds are it's a faulty ground
connection.

And if it's a faulty ground connection, look in the driver's side rear tail
light, because the black wire there is the ground for nearly everything.
If it's loose, cruddy, or corroded, that could be an issue.

Also, if you are not getting enough voltage (I believe 12.5v minimum on an
'87), you won't have enough to operate the computer.

So these are the usual suspects I'd interview first.

Fellow Alfisti:
The Alfa in question is an 87 Spyder Quad.
A few times over the past 3 or 4 weeks, while motoring on down the road, it
has, shall I say, "hiccupped"? - engine quit for a beat then immediately
restarted. All the idiot lights would be on for a few seconds, just as if
it were started from completely off. Kinda hard to troubleshoot when later
all runs ok.
But while driving this morning, it quit. Engine just stopped. I was able
to
coast to a spot in a parking lot (fortunately, I was only a half-mile from
home). Turned key off then on - nothing at all - no idiot lights, no
starter. Headlights work, so there are electrons somewhere, but the
electric windows do not work. Any thoughts as to what to check? Some
relay? Which one, where is it?

Dave,

Check to see if any of the electrics that are not controlled by the
ignition switch work. Can't remember what that is on an '87,
headlights, clock, horn(?), maybe a couple other things. Check to see
if the one of the previous owners installed a starter relay (didn't come
that way stock and is a common mod to save the ignition switch from
wearing out), if they did then check that relay.

If they work then it could be your ignition switch was on its way out
and then just let go. If nothing at all works I'd check the battery
voltage, maybe it is dead or near dead.

Alfisti:
Thanks for the suggestions I've received.
This happened Sunday morning (Fathers Day) and because the kids were home I
left it sitting all day in the dentist's parking lot, and had not yet had a
chance to act on any of your suggestions. That evening I went to put a
"engine won't start" note in the window.
For a lark, I turned the key - the engine started! Whoa! So immediately
drove towards home. 100 yards from my house, it quit again. As I was
coasting I tried to pop the clutch and restart - it didn't - but a moment
later with a turn of the key it did start. It's now in the garage at home.
Don't you just love intermittent problems? How do you diagnose that which
sometimes works, sometimes doesn't?
