I looked at a Mini before I bought my current VW GTI. I found the
short wheelbase made the ride very choppy - especially at freeway
speeds. I also spoke with a guy who owned one. He said that if he
spent his driving time blasting around corners in the Santa Cruz
Mountains and running errands in town, that it would be the perfect
car, but the first time he took the 400 mile trip to Los Angeles, he
realized that he had bought the wrong car. He said that it beat him
and his wife to death with it's short wheelbase induced choppy ride.
So, I gave it a pass. I do like them though and understand that they
handle great and are really fun to drive on 'B' roads. My GTI, OTOH,
is a crashing bore to drive. It pushes like a pig in corners, gives NO
feedback through the steering (which is as dead as a doorknob), the
brake pedal or the seat of one's pants. But it does have excellent
road-holding and will actually get up a twisty mountain road faster
than my Alfa GTV-6. But the Alfa is a REAL CAR, and even though it is
slower than the VW, unlike that car, the Alfa is an absolute,
unqualified grin from ear to ear up that same mountain road!

I'm extremely happy with my Mini Cooper. It does everything I want. I
thought about the fiat, but the Mini has more grunt. I had a tuner
spend 20
minutes remapping my on-board computer, and it is super fast now.
I've been
an Alfaholic for the last 20 years, and was into Fiats before then.
But I
certainly can recommend the Mini.
