According to a thread on the AlfaBB, it stands for Right Hand Drive:

G.D. = Guida Destra = drive right = rhd

However, I'm pretty sure you would have noticed if your car was RHD! I'd
guess at some point your car picked up a not-quite-correct ID plate? In any
rate, you could tell people that in your case, it stands for Giugiaro
Designed (even though Giorgetto Giugiaro was working for Bertone at the
time)
