Hi Peter,

I went there a year ago for a 2 week consulting trip for a friend, stayed
2 months, fell in love with the place, bought a piece of land I can build
on, saw economic opportunities that I don't have here and then met a girl.
I went to high school with my friend, he was literally on one of the last
boats/airplanes to get out of Cuba when Castro took over. His family lost
everything. They'd owned land and built factories and are still remembered
there. He's a sailor (as am I) and the North shore of DR is in a "hurricane
hole", the storms all go by the South side of the island

I was just back for 3 weeks and was married on September 15. I'm not
bringing her here, I'm going there. I can't take a car over 5 years old, which
means there is no parts or mechanical support for my 1973 or 1983 Alfas,
both cars I'd planned on keeping for the rest of my life. C'est la vie, n'est
pas?

Among other things, I'm an electrician, the electricity there sucks
(you're lucky to get 8 hours of 80 to 90 volts per day)and they don't have
electricians trained in the American way. I have a "maybe" to be a solar
importer
for a big project and make sure it gets installed correctly. I also might
be able to help get financing for future solar farms. The electricity there
is the most expensive in the world, close to $.20/ Kw/hr With solar,
batteries and a good inverter, it's not a problem if it's set up right.

I am hoping to take some old motorcycles, my 1972 Norton Commando, a 1972
Ducati 250 single (to be my everyday transportation bike) and a 1974 Ducati
750. I will keep the Italian flag flying!

As America seems to be in decline economically (at least for the 99%) a
lot of citizens are looking to move to various places in Latin America to
retire. I can't afford to retire, and there are plenty of under-employed
electricians here. The DR is still undiscovered in that regard, there are
pitfalls to be sure, and I hope to help other Americans looking to escape to
have
an easy transition. it's good if you speak at least a little Spanish.

I will miss my Alfas!

Hi Stevan,

I saw your posting in the alfa digest and was just wondering what was up
with the move?

Best regards,
Pete Lundquist
