Does anyone have a recommendation for someone to paint/restore old license plates? Thanks. Timothy in Santa Barbara ------------------------------ You can restore them yourself with some patience. The basic steps are: - strip off the old paint with paint stripper. - prime the surface with etching primer. - with several passes, lay down a fairly heavy base coat of paint the color of the lettering. - lay down a top coat of paint the desired final color of the plate and let it dry completely. - very gently remove the top coat of paint from the raised lettering using polishing compound on a soft cloth wrapped around a sanding block. This is the trickiest part of the process because with too aggressive a hand you can polish through the base coat to the primer layer. I've had good luck matching Duplicolor touch up paints paints to the colors need. They make a clear reflective paint for a reflective top coat if needed. Hope this is helpful.
