Bruce,
I have seen the clamp bolt on the shifter become loose enough for the
shifter to hit the floor pan and keep it from going all the way into gear. If
that's not the problem, you are probably right. The transmission needs to
come out.
My Duetto has been popping out of 5th and rev occasionally for a long time
but I feel very little to no "detent" when engaging either gear. I think the
spring that presses the ball down into that detent is either broken or weak.
Simple check if I could only get to it ;-)

Subject: [alfa] Popping out of Reverse

I have noticed over the past few months that my '73 GTV does not engage
reverse like it used to: I can feel that when putting it into reverse, it
just felt like it wasn't fully engaging the gears. Well, today it started
to pop out of reverse whenever any pressure was placed on the tranny. It
required a bit of effort to hold it in reverse by hand which does not bode
well.

First, I thought it might be the rubber shift boots were interfering so I
removed the 3 screws holding the center console to the cabin floor. Even
with the center console able to move about freely, it continued it's bad
ways. Then I had a look at the rubber tranny mount and it looks in great
shape; no rips or tears.

I'm thinking that I need to remove the tranny to have it rebuilt ... or is
there something else I can try ??

Thanks,
Bruce
