Gentle Alfisti, I have the box open for the 66 GT and am very surprised to find that the original grooved synchros are in a rather pristine condition. Also the bulb at the output shaft is perfect. After all these years and untold miles, it seems wholly unlikely that this transmission should be in the condition it's in. My first thought was to replace the synchros with the newer type, along with the internal bits, but I am now considering just buttoning the thing up with only new seals. As I inspect the existing synchros, the lands and grooves seem perfect and uniform on each wearing surface. Normally I can determine visually the general health of a moly synchro by looking carefully at it. Have the grooved (early) synchros been available for rebuilding? Do they last longer than the later moly versions? I never drove the car and cannot report on the tranny's function.
Also, who can refurbish a burnam steering box? Is this a machine shop bench job, or should it be sent to a specialist? As usual, I thank you all on the Digest. modelle in somers point 115.02, 105.04 g.d. -- to be removed from alfa, see http://www.digest.net/bin/digest-subs.cgi or email "unsubscribe alfa" to [email protected]
