Be careful when choosing to use an aftermarket solenoid on a Spice injected car. The impedance on most of the aftermarket units is different than the original Bosch and car result in the starter motor staying engaged even when you have turned off the key switch. One way to get around this is to install a set of relays to isolate the starter solenoid from the cold start Spica solenoid.
There was a series of Bosch solenoids that had a plastic bushing (sort of like a fat oring) on the solenoid piston. Over time the plastic expand and causes the solenoid to stick, usually when trying to restart the car when hot. I have had some success disassembling the solenoid and reducing the outer diameter of the plastic bushing. Best bet is still to purchase an original Bosch solenoid. Cleaning the inside of the starter and replacing the brushes will usually extend the life of the starter motor for many years. Or simply buy a rebuilt unit from a reputable source. -- to be removed from alfa, see http://www.digest.net/bin/digest-subs.cgi or email "unsubscribe alfa" to [email protected]
