Season's greetings to Alfisti everywhere! Here's a query for the knowledgeable out there. An Alfaclub friend of mine recently bought a 105 series coupe, and it was a bit rough, and we found one cyl wasn't contributing any power. While looking into various things we tried connecting a vacuum gauge to the test-ports provided on the carbs (40 DCOEs). On all four ports, the reading was only about 8 inches, and flickering plus and minus a couple of inches. It was the same on the bad cylinder and the three good ones. I thought that at idle we should be seeing around 20 inches on an engine in normal good condition, so 8 inches seemed bad.

But we hadn't used a vacuum gauge ever before, so we connected it up to the test-ports on a known good engine (Alfasud with Dellorto 40 downdrafts, one barrel per cyl as per DCOE Alfas). And well, what do you know, the readings were same as with the rough-running Alfanord engine.

So, are we not using the gauge correctly? What should we see at idle on the port of a DCOE sidedraft or downdraft? I noticed the following statement on the IAP website page about vac gauge readings, just above their chart that lists about 20 inches as being normal - it said, "The following readings will not apply to cars with a separate venturi for each cylinder (like Weber DCOE or Dellorto carbs)." So, what's the story? What should we see with these carbs?

Thanks all !
Graham H, NZ. (GTV, 156, Alfasud).
