I almost suggested that (in part because I just ordered one for my
brother - http://books.sae.org/bosch8/ - the retail price is now barely
15% of what I paid for my 6th edition a few years ago; I'm guessing they
must have outsourced printing to China or something). But it's
definitely beyond the reading level of Carrol Smith's works - very dense
and you really have to know what you're looking for. On the other end
of the words vs. illustrations spectrum is the similarly-titled but very
different _Bosch Book of the Motor Car_ which I just couldn't get enough
of when I was a kid; sadly, I'm pretty sure it's been out of print since
before I was born.

Scott,
Get him a copy of Robert Bosch's Automotive Handbook. Several editions are out
there in the used market places like Amazon, etc. $10 - $100
