Bob A's points ;-) are correct, it is definitely easier to do with the distributor removed from the engine. Regarding the suggestions for substitution or replacement, I personally am a fan of the Crane Cams XR3000. It is an optical-trigger points conversion that is completely reversible, if desired, save for the holes required to mount the control unit. I discovered these units when I used to sell parts for Type 1 VW's (although most bought the less expensive XR700) and never had a customer come in with a complaint. I can attest to the strength of the spark: I made the mistake of pulling one of the plug wires when the engine was running (done it many times before in the past, no big deal) and it hurt, A LOT!! The Alfetta never ran smoother or more evenly than with this setup.
If I remember correctly, the one for Marelli distributors is the 3000-0231.

I know some folks are proponents of the Pertronix Ignitor. I have no experience with that one, but one advantage is no unsightly external control unit. So, if original appearance is a priority, that may be one way to go.
