The Moto-Lita steering wheels are way too nice to 'modify', along with being valuable. I would like to point out that both regular folks along with names like Fangio and Moss did just fine using skinny steering wheels. I doubt much that hands, overall, have gotten larger since then.
So hang the Mota-Lita in your man-cave and buy a fat (ready-made) padded leather steering wheel. Yes, I'm aware that some vintage race car drivers did use the heavy stranded cord to wrap around their steering wheels. I imagine it might have been more for preventing sweaty palms from slipping when turning if they weren't into using driving gloves.
