Richard:

it now hints at firing, just barely. i need to make up a punch list of what to do next. any suggestions?

Find out, directly, why it won't start. Take your inductive timing light and put it on the lead going from the coil to the center of the distributor cap. Point the timing light at a flat surface, turn the engine over and see if all of the flashes look even and bright. Next, put your inductive pickup on a single spark plug wire and compare the brightness of the flashes. They will be far less frequent, but should look about the same brightness. No flashes or weak flashes? Then ignition is the problem. Next, disconnect the fuel line from the back of the cold start injector and put a fuel pressure gauge in place. Turn the engine over again and make sure you're seeing about 37 psi. If not, then fuel delivery is the problem.

Once you're going down the right path, then you can begin picking apart that
system.
