Hi All
Greg Hermann correctly pointed out that these carbs have internal
springs which assist in closing the throttle butterflies but in my
experience they are not strong enough to shut the butterflies
positively. One of the first things I learned from reading the
instruction manual that came with my very first Alfa which was a 1750 GT
Veloce was that accurate carb tuning was not possible without performing
that first step I mentioned of adjusting the preload on the throttle.
That was something I had to investigate after giving the car to the Alfa
agents at that time for a service and finding that every time I came to
a stop light, the engine would rev and refuse to settle to idle.
Unfortunately I had to drive 200 miles like that that very day because
we were travelling to see my in laws. I had to force the engine to slow
down by putting the car in 1st, applying the brake and letting the
clutch out gradually at every stop!!!. Once at our destination, I tuned
the carbs from scratch following the method in that manual - thank you
Mr Alfa! - and the car ran sweetly since.
My 2 cents worth :-)
Happy motoring
