There is still resistance when pulling on the trunk release lever which
leads you to believe that the cable remains in one piece ?

If so, I'd think that the trunk latch mechanism could be gummed up and not
allowing the hood to be released.  My Spider manual, in my garage, sez that
if the cable breaks inside the sheath, there is an access hole in the floor
plan just underneath the latching mechanism.  They say to push the floor
mat aside and use a hooked probe to release the mechanism from below.
Sounds like a real fishing expedition as you try all sorts of hooked
implements.

You might have an easier time if the cable is still intact and a long
screwdriver poked into the innards of the latch mechanism to free it up.
