It wants libncursesw.so.5, but lfs-7.8 has libncursesw.so.6

The workaround of course is to copy .5 from an older build. I didn't
try, but it's possible a symlink from libncursesw.so.5 to
libncursesw.so.6 might work.

Have you tried to recompile the menu system? Normally, it amounts to
"make clean && make" (save any "configuration" file you may want to keep
first). I have then:

Yes, it will be like using menuconfig with the linux kernel. If the kernel
menu was built with ncurses 5.9 from the host, and then the host is
upgraded to ncurses 6.0 and ncurses 5.9 libraries were removed, then
menuconfig will not work. Rebuild the menu system and all should be fine.

Yes, rebuilding works, but the appearance is slightly different. The items at the bottom, <Select>, < Exit >, etc all appear to be grayed out. Only the first letter, S for select, etc is highlighted slightly, and they do not work. The only think I seem to be able to get to is Help. I can back up with the escape key, but behavior is different.

The menu item "Do you wish to save your new JHALFS configuration?" looks normal.

I tried doing a fresh checkout and get the same thing. There must be something different about libncursesw.so.6.

Cross checking the linux make menuconfig, that is normal.
