I believe the advances in cache performance greatly outweigh the
advances of disk performance where
sorting is concerned.  And (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) the
modern intel/amd chips are
very heavily reliant on good cache performance to achieve the speeds
they claim that they reach.

Also, hard drives get fragmented, so their speed gets trashed too.  (I
think).
