I believe the advances in cache performance greatly outweigh the advances of disk performance where sorting is concerned. And (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) the modern intel/amd chips are very heavily reliant on good cache performance to achieve the speeds they claim that they reach.
Also, hard drives get fragmented, so their speed gets trashed too.
