Let's say it works - and it's faster, also.

But now the data you want is spread out still across a few different
machines. You'd still have to:

1) download each friend's part of the total download,

and

2) then re-assemble the download back together again.

Also, I don't view the co-ordinated download you're thinking about, as
being a trivial exercise, in the least. You'd need some kind of a
download manager to oversee the success of the download, e.g say one
friend is downloading faster than one, and one friend is d/l'ing slower
than you, or one friend loses his connection during the d/l, or his
throughput drops a lot.

Lots of co-ordination would be necessary.

Maximizing your total bandwidth, or getting a faster connection, makes
sense. But this doesn't sound like a real improvement, to me.
