I'm not sure if rounding to n digits will help (it may, if it's in borderline cases).  As far as I know, double can go up to 1e308 (not sure the correct range, but you can easily check it online ... wikipedia is a good source for IEEE floating point format).  I think if you go overflow or underflow during your computation, ... you'll get that NAN.
