Number the balls 1 through 9.
Weigh balls 1, 2, and 3 versus 7, 8, and 9.
If the left side is heavier, write down 1; if the right side is
heaver, write down 7; and if the two sides balance, write down 4.

Now weigh balls 1, 4, and 7 versus 3, 6, and 9.
If the two sides balance, add 1 to what you wrote down after the first
weighing; if the right side is heaver, add 2; and don't do anything if
the left side is heaver.

The result is the number of the heaver ball.

E.g., suppose that on the first weighing, the left side is heaver, so
you write down 1; and then on the second weighing the right side is
heavier so you add 2. Then the heavier ball is ball number 3.
