I suggest you read virtual memory concept one more time(Galvin (OS priciples))... and of course as you said CPU registers also matters... RAM extension is mainly depends on processor...whether it is 16 bit or 32 or 64... You check the entry for PHYSICAL ADDRESS EXTENSION in wikipedia.. hope that will clear yoy
