How about packaging the sources anyway? That would eliminate an entry
barrier.
(Imagine a Windows user who's coming from an MSVC+SourceSafe background:
he'd have to find out what CVS is, have to install WinCVS unless he's
detouring through CygWin and the cvs command line (in which case he's
going to give up, frustrated); then he'd have to figure out how to log
in, where to place what parts of the information given on the web page,
and finally wait until the download is finished with no indication how
long it's still going to take.)
