Is there a way to convert old pickles?
(They may contain critical data after all.)

No. So far we are not aware of any users dealing with critical data. Hence we did not consider it worthwhile to invest in a respective tool for now.

OK.

Do you have such critical data?

Not yet, fortunately.
...or unfortunately, depending on perspective :-)

I'm planning a server application with a persistent "state of the world". That world state gets pickled on a regular basis, mostly for backup purposes for restarting after crashes and transporting to new servers, and maybe for tracing the history of particularly obnoxious bugs. I'm trying to abolish the RDBMS from the application. The combination of a fast immutable map data structure and persistence through pickling could achieve what an RDBMS can do without the pain from the impedance mismatch.

Regards,
Jo
