Just upgraded my computer speakers again as I needed computer speakers that were more flexible than the wonderful B&W MM1 system I so very much enjoy. I needed to find a system that had multiple inputs such as Bluetooth given the amount of computers and smart devices I’m using these days. I went down to my local Hi-fi specialist to see if they could help out and stumbled across the Kef Egg system. The speakers do in fact look like eggs standing up on their ends. The stands are very solid and won’t be knocked over on a computer desk in a hurry, each egg is 8 inches high or there about. Each egg has only one driver and this is the Kef Unicue driver which consists of 2 parts, the main cone and the tweeter in the middle of that, though these drivers are small the sound stage they present is incredible. The Kef Egg system connects to your computer via USB so you get the benefit of the 96K DAC built into the Kef Egg. A 3.5MM socket on the right speaker allows input of digital and analogue signals so this speaker system would be right at home connected to the output of a TV or CD player. Bluetooth APTX connectivity is supported by the system and this is confirmed by my Sony xPeria phone which tells me if its connected to a bluetooth device supporting APTX. For those who wish to take things further a sub-woofer can be connected though to me the Kef Egg system produces enough bass as is. My only complaint with the Kef Egg system is the lack of a Headphones amplifier. The Egg is supplied with a very nice remote control with actual click type buttons though perhaps some people may have trouble finding the buttons as they’re not raised too much from the controller itself.
