That's compression though, and not really connected with the sample size. You're right though, high frequency sounds like cymbal splashes are always the first thing to be affected by heavy compression.
I think the human ear "tops out" at around 22,000 khz. That doesn't mean you don't get benefits from higher sample rates, but they will be pretty subtle for mere listening. The human voice?
