I finally got mine earlier this week and now I know why so many people
including some list members here have hi regard for the radio.
I won’t go into it all now but I will say that I share your thoughts completely
and if you are a radio nutter as I am then I really recommend you do your best
to track down an ICF-2010 before they either disappear completely or become to
expensive to buy.
Luckily for me the cost of mine didn’t break the bank though I do warn you
you’re looking perhaps at more than a couple of hundred dollars for a set in
good condition.
I was warned when I bought the set I now own that the clock batteries had some
problems with the contacts, turns out this is an easy problem to fix and a
recognised common fault with the 2010 so I’ll leave that in the hands of my
local tech to deal with.
I’ve tested the radio over the last 24 hours and the Medium-Wave is very good
though there are radios around that would surpass the 2010’s Medium-Wave
performance if its specifically medium-wave you’re after.
Shortwave is absolutely superb and holds up well against the best shortwave
portables I have, - Tecsun S-8800, PL-660 and S-2000 etc- and that’s remarkable
in itself since the Sony was made back in those days when Digital Signal
Processing was never heard of.
So that’s the great news and now for the absolutely appalling news and you do
have to wonder what on earth Sony were thinking at the time they designed the
ICF-2010.
Reception on Long-Wave, FM and Air Band is appalling.
There’s plenty of good stuff on the net about the ICF-2010 including several
books that have been written about the radio along with a Sony ICF-2010 user
group and heaps of articles on modifications you may wish to make to your set -
enabling Stereo AM for example or putting capacitors across the batteries for
the clock/memory so you don’t use all those precious 32 memory presets when you
take the batteries out to replace with new one’s.
