I prefer to use .flac for recordings, then make an mp3 version of them for
use on things like a phone or other portable device.

the heads
on my machine mine is done by the use of a trimming tool
its a heavy monster

personally, I like the aphex in2:

as it has individual level controls on each channel, plus a rather
useful optical compressor, which comes in handy if you have to crank
things up a bit for some quieter parts of a recording, but don't want
to over do things on the louder parts.
as far as tape decks go, I personally use a marantz cp430, as it has
the biost adjustment, and is a 3head machine. plus as a portable
machine, it doesn't take up a lot of space when being used, and can
easily be stored away, when not in use.
when I had my full studio, I did used to have a really super teac deck,
which had just about any sort of adjustment one could think of, plus a
wired remote. it could also work at double the normal tape speed, for
making better quality recordings. but unfortunately I didn't keep a
record of it's model number.

those I have seen, the actual decks do tend to be of rather poor
quality.

hi there if u want to transfer your tapes on to your pc
i would invest if u can in a good quality tape machine
that has controls for alining the play and record heads,
as different tapes r recorded with different head positions.
if your soundcard has a 3.5 jack socket,
then plug a mixer in to the line in socket,
and plug your tape machine in to one of your faiders,/line ins on
the mixer.
