This document describes man-in-the-middle attacks possible when compound
authentication methods are used without cryptographically binding the
methods together. Several protocols currently being proposed within the
IETF are vulnerable to these attacks, including IKE with XAUTH, PIC,
PANA over TLS, EAP TTLS, and PEAP. This document reviews potential
solutions to the problem, including solutions which can be implemented
as extensions to the EAP protocol.
