On Wednesday, March 30, 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a proposed decision memorandum to cover on-label use of Sipuleucel-T (PROVENGE(r)) under a national coverage determination. PROVENGE(r) is the only FDA-approved autologous cellular immunotherapy treatment for metastatic prostate cancer. It is labeled for use in men with asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) prostate cancer. Coverage of off-label use would be determined by Medicare's local contractors.
CMS will accept public comments on this proposed decision for 30 days. A final decision will be announced within 90 days.
