The dark red upside down question mark indicates that parser did not understand
your input.
In this case the parser knows (be it good or bad) that + and * are binary
operators and are required to have arguments.
You need to type
setR ^{{}+{}}_{{}*{}}
where {} denotes an empty group expression that can be used anywhere where an
argument is required.
And about the second problem: all should be Ok if you use the formula above.
There should also be a help page about Math somewhere. There are useful other
hints as well.
