I agree that the text layout looks better if pair kerning is activated. We
should activate pair kerning as default but not in the next minor version. I
prefer OOo3.0. Why?
First it will have an impact on performance and it has to tested very seriously.
Even this impact should be low, for Windows98 it is not. We improved the cache
for Windows98, but I don't think that's a good idea to enable pair kerning as
default.
Second we are in a transition phase between the well-known pair kerning tables
in fonts and a new technology for glyph positioning (GPOS). More and more fonts
will support the new technology, but OOo2.0 is not enabled for this. For OOo3.0
we need the support for GPOS and then it's the right time to change the default
for pair kerning.
