Most curious: "$ xprop -root" simply doesn't work for me with '$ ssh -X
localhost' - amazing:
$ xprop -root
X Error of failed request: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 20 (X_GetProperty)
Atom id in failed request: 0x25c
Serial number of failed request: 11
Current serial number in output stream: 11

Most strange - it seems 'ssh -Y' works fine though, clearly I need to RTFM &
work out why this acute brokenness seems to be the default.
