Problem

A database file xxxx.odb for HSQLDB in a directory whose
name includes non ASCII letters seems not to work properly.

This phenomenon can be probably observed with recent
OpenOffice.org, StarOffice, and StarSuite on any platforms.

Phenomenon, however, might be slightly different depending
  on the platform you use.

The following instructions are based on the results with
StarSuite 8 Japanese build 680m124(Build:8945) running on
  Solaris 10 3/05 x86 with LANG=C.

Reproduction

 (Scenario A)
   1. Create a new database file in the default work directory.
   2. Make a table and fill it with some records.
   3. Close the database file.
   4. Open it and confirm if the table exists.

      It should be there.

   5. Create a directory whose name includes non ASCII letters
      e.g. Bücher

I created this directory through the File > Save As
dialogue window with Special Characters that appears
by clicking a right button on the text box for the name.

   6. Copy the original database file into the new directory.
   7. Open the copied database file through File > Open
   8. Confirm if the table exists.

You may notice the fact that the table created in the
      step 2 above disappear.

In addition to the missing table, you may find an unknown
directory named B?cher next to the directory Bücher.

A lock file could be find in the directory B?cher instead
      of the expected directory Bücher.

   9. Close the database file.
  10. Copy the original database file into the unexpected
      directory called B?cher.
  11. Open it through File > Open
  12. Cofirm if the table exists.

Now you may find the original table that was missing in
      the step 8 above.

 (Scenario B)
   1. Create another new database file and save it in the
      directory Bücher.
   2. Create a table and fill it with some records.
   3. Close it.
   4. Open it.
   5. Confirm if the table still exists.

You may find the fact that the table has gone.

After working with the steps above, give a glance at the insides:

Archive: ./New Database.odb
 Length Date Time Name
 ------ ---- ---- ----
     28 10-07-05 00:09 mimetype

 ------ -------
   5403 8 files

  That looks perfect!

What is the letter period as in database/.properties ?

  What is going on!

Acknowledgments

This phenomenon was originally reported by Masafumi Kamataki
  and he conducted deep investigations.

He used a Japanese variant of OpenOffice.org 1.9 and faced
missing tables when he copied a database file into another
folder whose name had Japanese characters on Windows.

Thanks to Kamataki, now we can reproduce this phenomenon
  in a more general way.
