Quick answer: YES (thanks :)

Long answer:

- ah...avoid beta mozilla stuff...oops... sorry about missing 47496 - should
have caught that one

Correction to "problem #2": it's more likely that the thunderbird profile likely
contains/contained a valid certificate. When I...

- removed fedora thunderbird 1.5beta rpms
- installed thunderbird 1.0.7 from mozilla.org
- the "Your Certificates" tab in Thunderbird displays my certificate (recognized
from the previous thunderbird user profile)

However,

1. run soffice
2. open a file
3. Click File, then click "Digital signatures"
4. openoffice now opens "Digital signatures" window; when I click on the "Add"
button, the "Select certificate" window is displayed but neither mozilla,
firefox, nor thunderbird certificates are displayed...

take-home message:
------------------
just giving the fedora thunderbird 1.5beta the heave-ho and using mozilla.org's
thunderbird 1.0.7 doesn't do the job...even when the certificate is fine (see
below)

So...without fiddling with the thunderbird user profile, I tried your
suggestion:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] jktnb7d6.default]# echo "$MOZILLA_CERTIFICATE_FOLDER"
/root/.thunderbird/jktnb7d6.default
[EMAIL PROTECTED] jktnb7d6.default]# ls /root/.thunderbird/jktnb7d6.default
abook.mab defaults.ini key3.db prefs.js
cert8.db extensions localstore.rdf secmod.db
chrome extensions.cache Mail US
compatibility.ini extensions.ini mailViews.dat virtualFolders.dat
components.ini extensions.rdf mimeTypes.rdf xpti.dat
compreg.dat history.mab panacea.dat XUL.mfasl
[EMAIL PROTECTED] jktnb7d6.default]#

Then went ahead and...

1. run soffice
2. open a file
3. Click File, then click "Digital signatures"
4. openoffice now opens "Digital signatures" window and is able to recognize the
certificate

Take-home message:
------------------
your indication in 47496 that describes detection suggests that something still
isn't happening quite right...even though certificate detection can be coerced
to work by setting MOZILLA_CERTIFICATE_FOLDER

---cut from 47496
The detection follows these rules :

1) the env MOZILLA_CERTIFICATE_FOLDER
2) Thunderbird
3) Mozilla
4) Firefox

It looks like #1 works but #2 (possible #3 and #4) are broken in Fedora -- even
with openoffice.org builds and mozilla.org builds. I don't know if this is much
of a concern or not...
