I tried the steps (First way) that you describe on my PC (1.6 GHz, 512 MB RAM)
with Windows XP Professional using the OpenOfficeorg Writer 2.0 RC2, but I
cannot reproduce the crash.
Could you attach the .sxw file you use so I can test the second way that you
describe?
