To your other question: Thanks to MS all files have an 8.3 representation, e.g.
/cygdrive/c/j2sdk1.4.1_03 <-> /cygdrive/c/J2SDK1~1.1_0/
The short name is defined by the filesystem and can be seen with "dir /X" in a
cmd.exe prompt. (Or use cygpath with the -s option)
