So it's for creating 64bit binaries. It's not set if you compile 32bit binaries on 64bit hardware. GCC has a similiar define Regarding configure ... well, some time ago some of us (notably Ause and me) decided that it's hopeless to introduce more and more environment variables, especially if they translate to command line compiler defines. We've got to many of them, anyway.
