I opened the same document after recovery and made changes, so it was saved in an unsigned format. I pressed the file -> signature to select the cert and sign the document. Added the cert again to sign. One thing to mention is that I have a master password protecting info in firefox. SO while importing cert I was prompted for the password by writer, which I gave. The certificate was added.
