I appreciate the time and effort in attempting to resolve this issue. I agree
that it would appear to be a corrupt registry issue -- because the install
worked on two out of three PCs with the same O/S at my location.

However, I completely recreated the "problem" PC by re-installing the Win98 O/S
and had Open Office hang again. I think I've found a problem with the
installation process.

Yes, I finally did get OO to successfully install, so on that level, the
problem is solved, at least for me. However, I found that upon install, the
installer put out this message: "This package requires a newer version of the
Windows Installer. Do you want to update....etc...." When I replied "yes", I
received and error message: "The specified service already exists." (Which I
knew to be true, before I even attempted the install as my version of the O/S
has always had the newest version of the installer.)

The second problem was that the Open Office installation hung when I gave it an
alternative folder name for its installation. As soon as I recycled the process
(getting the same error message about the version of Windows Installer, BTW),
and accepted the default folder name, Open Office proceeded to install
correctly on my PC.

Since this was a new install of Windows 98 SE -- straight from the CD -- I
would suggest that there are still some problems existing with the installation
process.

#1 The correct version of the existing Windows Installer is not recognized by
the Open Office installation process.

#2. Apparently, I am not able to install Open Office to a folder of my
choosing, as per instructions.

Thanks again, for the overview of this problem. As one "techie" to another, I
certainly appreciate the second set of eyes and different view point -- that is
always a useful exercise, in my book.
