------- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Nov 29 11:47:59 -0800 2005 ------- Yes multiple searches revealed huge interest in this but with no real resolve that I could find (so here we go). Making this app truly portable could be as simple as 1) having it save its userprofiles (configuration(s)) in its own folder and 2) using a built in system integration check. 1) Userprofiles Saved In The App's Folder I know I’m not the only one who tries to keep my registry & active partition clean, minimized, & backed up. And I know I’m not the only one who despises those apps that just keep adding more bloat to the registry or userprofiles or active partition. When I do "get burned" by such an app, 95% of the time I take it right back out – since this is a strong indicator for me of thoughtless design and thus a loss of trust. I’ll often even overwrite my whole active partition with a recent clone just to make sure I get rid of any other nasty surprises. I realize that the registry / userprofiles allows for multi-user configuration settings, but why not just let the app save / read these configurations to / from its own folder? Not only would this allow the app's userprofiles to be easily backed up along with the app's folder, but as well would make these userprofiles available whenever this backup is ported to another system. And if no userprofile matches on the PC being used, just be given a choice of profiles. This Notepad++ thread might give some ideas with respect to userprofiles saved in the app's folder: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1265898&forum_id=331753 Notepad++ now has similar feature built into its 3.3 version. 2) A Built In System Integration Check System integration or "installation" (for a portable app) doesn't really need to be anything more than the app looking to see if certain things like file associations or shortcuts have been set. If not, a system integration window could open and offer these options. A nice option to have on this window would be to have app undo any changes at next system restart -- in case you do NOT want to leave these changes on someone else's PC. Summary: NO install needed. Just download & unzip and you're ready to go. NO extra bloat to add to your Active Partition (registry or profiles). NO extra locations to be concerned with when backing up the app: just its folder & ONLY its folder. Very useful for keeping a system clean, organized, minimized, and backed up. Very useful for porting this app to things like thumb drives or "live" boot CDs or whatever. I realize that there are portable versions, but these are whole separate compilations / downloads. I was wanting to wait for this important feature within the main project rather than start working with custom builds.
