I see the same thing but after saving as doc. I wrote and saved as odt
originally then saved as doc for others w/o OOo to read/edit. After that I
continued to work in doc format. Eventally, but possibly not after the first
save as doc, I have noticed that misspelled words were not flagged with the
squiggly red underline nor would they be found when a global spellcheck was run.
If I started a "new" document and type in the misspelled words exactly the same
way, only then would they be seen as mispelled. But if I copied the misspelled
word from doc and paste to the the new document (not yet saved in any format)
the misspelling would not be seen. 

I am seeing this on linux (updated fc 3) with Writer 2.0. Also, seems similar to
Issue 58266.
