We could of course wait synchronously for the CUPS server to deliver its list of printers; in fact that was the first implementation. Then came up CUPS servers that never finished doing that, holding the whole OOo process at startup. So we now have to get CUPS's printers in another thread, and have to live with possibly never getting the list of printers.
