There is no downplaying involved. There are just problems that cannot easily be
solved. We could of course wait synchronously for the CUPS server to deliver its
list of printers; in fact that was the first implementation. Then came up CUPS
servers that never finished doing that, holding the whole OOo process at
startup. So we now have to get CUPS's printers in another thread, and have to
live with possibly never getting the list of printers. Of course this is a
problem when you actually want to print, but at least you can still edit your
documents.
