Please don't commit this patch.
We think this is a regression in gcc 4.1, hopefully to be fixed before 4.1
becomes final.
If all branches in the switch return anything (or throw an exception), the
compiler should be able to detect that.
We don't want to change code for a compiler regression, at least not when it's
not essential for building it.
