Just received this comment from Alexander Lehner, it actually fixes the problem
for me:
I just read the bugzilla concerning hanging javaldx - I had the same problem
(with java 1.4.2.03-b2 and the 1.5.0_03 that was provided by the
OOo-2.0.1*.rpm). I resolved it by modifying the script
/opt/openoffice.org2.0/program/soffice
in line 161 to:
java_ld_library_path=`LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 "$sd_prog/javaldx"
$BOOTSTRAPVARS`
(inserted the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 statement).
I don't know the exact background but it is known that java sometimes needs this
kind of 'hint'...
