2006 -------
I have a page-sized image that I would like to type over with text. This is
sortof like having a watermark, except that I don't want it to be faint. What I
did was paste in the image, set the wrapping to "wrap through" and resize the
image so that it would take up the whole page.

That's where I got stuck. I could not find ANY way to deselect the image so
that I could start typing text into the page. Usually, to deselect an image,
you click outside of the image, but since the image is the size of the page,
there is no place outside of the image to click. (Clicking on the gray
background outside of the page does nothing.)

This is a show-stopper for me. I can't use OOo for this purpose, even though it
should be just fine for it. There may be another way, but the documentation
online for OOo 2.0 doesn't seem to be organized in such a way that I can get an
answer to it by googling. Moreover, digging through the menu options didn't
yield anything, so if there IS a solution, it's not well-enough designed so that
the average user can find it.

Setting the wrap to "in background" didn't help at all.

A dirty fix would be to allow clicking on the gray background outside of the
page to cause an image to be deselected, but then you have to solve the problem
of the fact that clicking anywhere on the page will select the image rather than
the page. A better solution would be to have a menu or dialog that lists all
objects in the document (one of which is the main text area of the document) and
lets you select and/or move to that object.
