It's actually much simpler:

To reproduce (Gnome NWF/GTK+, Metacity 2.8.8)

1. Configure Gnome title bar action "Roll up"
   (Applications->Desktop Preferences->Windows:Titlebar Action)

2. Open Word Processor component
3. Show Stylist by pressing F11 or menu command
4. Double click on Stylist titlebar. It is shaded.
5. Click on the "Close" Icon ("X") in titlebar to close
   the shaded Stylist
6. Press F11 again, Stylist is gone and does not come back.
7. The window reappears after killing (restarting) Metacity
   and pressing F11 twice.

While it is "gone", xwininfo gives me the following information
on the stylist, don't know if helpful:
