I replicated the error using the steps listed above in Windows XP/2000 with OOo
2.0 . I also ran further tests to get a better understanding of where the error
may lie.

1.The first thing I noticed was after step six if I clicked in the text box
again the the red line from the autospellcheck would disappear in the
thumbnail representation of the slide. So basically the thumbnail would get
updated after we click in the text box.
2.Then I tried the reverse process. I left the autospellcheck off, created a
text box with “abcd” as the text and unselected the text box. Then I turned
the autospellcheck on. The red line appeared under the text on the page, but

not in the thumbnail. Again, after I clicked on the text box and selected
the
  text, the thumbnail got updated.
3.Another test I ran was after step six if I moved the text box the thumbnail
got updated or even if I added line or a shape of some sort the the thumbnail
  would get updated.
4.Finally after step six I tried just to add a new slide and even that updated
  the thumbnail.

It seems that the selection of the autospellcheck button isn't updating the
thumbnail at all. However, every other action is updating the thumbnail.
