I believe I can confirm what arunashri is referring to:
1. Start Writer. Type
text
only those four letters. Hit Shift-Home to select what you just typed.
2. Click Insert > Hyperlink. Enter http://www.test.com as the Target. Hit Apply
and Close.
3. Your text will still be highlighted. Hit End to clear it and go to the end of
the line.
4. Type something, anything.. it will be included in the text of the link.
Following the same procedure in Word, the additional text you type after hitting
End will not be included in the text of the link.
Confirmed using OOo 1.9.77.
