this is already possible: Under OOo Calc->Menubar->Tools->Customize...-
>Keyboard->Shortcut keys select a key combination and then select ~Keyboard-
>Functions->Category: Format, Function: Merge Cells and click Modify.
If you would like to have a keyboard shortcut standardly for it, reopen this
issue.
There is also a merge cells icon on the Format toolbar...
->Ace_dent: Repeat doesn't have a keyboard shortcut by default (but you can
assign one using above method, Category Edit)=>issue...
